McCann appointed as new Donegal senior hurling manager

Burt native Mickey McCann has been appointed as the new Donegal senior hurling team manager.

The Donegal County Board this evening confirmed that McCann had been ratified on a two-year term, to take him until the end of the 2019 campaign.

McCann will then have the option of a third year.

Former Burt and Donegal hurler McCann will be joined by Ballinascreen’s Gabriel O’Kane, who takes on the role of trainer/coach.

Another selector will be added to the management team.

“We wish Mickey, his management team, backroom personnel and squad of players every success as we look forward now to the 2018 season,” a statement from the Donegal County Board said.

McCann’s appointment follows a long process to select a successor to Ardal McDermott.

At a meeting of the Donegal county committee in September, Chairman Sean Dunnion confirmed that they had received ‘a number’ of applications or nominations, but the selection committee had concluded that ‘no candidates presented themselves that could be put forward for ratifying’.

Dunnion, County Treasurer Cieran Kelly, Jason Ewing, Gary Duffy and Michael McGeehin were named on a selection committee to oversee the appointment and have brought McCann in as their man.

In 2016, Donegal were relegated from Division 2B, but reached a Nicky Rackard Cup semi-final where they were beaten by Mayo.

This year, Donegal were crowned Division 3A winners and return to Division 2B for 2018. After losses to Tyrone and Monaghan, they made their exit from the Nicky Rackard Cup.
