Two young women have been rushed to hospital following a head-on collision this evening.

The crash happened around 8.20pm on the main Glenties to Ardara Road close to the local Bord na Mona plant.

Two young French women, who had just arrived in Ireland this evening, collided with a van.

A number of ambulances and fire brigades, as well as Gardai rushed to the scene of the crash.

The two tourists were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where it is understood they are being treated for a number of fractures.

Their injuries are not life-threatening.

The driver of the van, a local man from Glenties, was shaken but otherwise unhurt following the crash.

The road had been closed but has now reopened.

It is the first major crash of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Gardai have appealed to people to slow down with increased traffic on the roads.
