It’s the time of year where we once more must anxiously try to recall whether the clocks go back or forward.
A useful figure of speech to help remember this is “Spring forward, Fall back”.
The clocks are set to go back one hour on October 29th at 2am – and yes, this is “the good one” which means you’ll get an extra hour in bed tomorrow morning (and time for an extra few pints if you’re out tonight!)
With the clocks going back, this signals the beginning of the longer, darker winter evenings. In light of this, Donegal Road Safety Working Group is appealing to all road users especially pedestrians and cyclists to stay safe and be seen.
Why do we do this?
New Zealander George Hudson from New Zealand first proposed the idea of daylight saving in 1895, with it being implemented in The German Empire and Austria-Hungary in 1916. Many countries have used it at various times since then, particularly since the energy crisis of the 1970s.
Hudson wanted people to take advantage of the bright summer mornings, and proposed a clock change in a bid to get people out of bed earlier!
