One of Donegal’s best-known sports club is fighting for its future.
The Swilly Seals swimming club, founded in 1985 and based in Letterkenny, needs vital funding if it is to continue to teach young people how to swim and to compete at the highest level.
In recent years the club, which has 127 swimmers aged between 7 and 17, has had its funding cut by 50% and is project to run out of cash by the summer of 2018.
Now in a bid to raise some vital funding, the club is to take on a unique fundraising project.
On 03 December 2017, club members will attempt to swim the distance of the Donegal Wild Atlantic Way Ultra (www.donegalatlanticwayultra.com) from Letterkenny all around the Donegal Wild Atlantic Way and back to Letterkenny.
That’s a total of 555,000 metres (555km) and the swim will take place in the Aura Leisure Centre, Letterkenny.
As part of their fundraising Swilly Seals have decided to give 25% of all money raised to three Charities,
• Pieta House (www.pieta.ie)
• Donegal Hospice (www.donegalhospice.ie)
• St. Vincent de Paul (www.svp.ie)
The charities selected have confirmed that all monies raised by this fundraising will be retained by the charities here and used for services in Donegal.
Swilly Seals have set a target of €20,000 with €5,000 of this total going to the collective three charities.
