Two young tourists involved in a head-on collision outside Glenties may have been driving on the wrong side of the road.
The French tourists, both in their 20s, only arrived in Ireland just hours before the crash.
The crash happened around 8.20pm on Saturday evening on the main Glenties to Ardara Road close to the local Bord na Mona plant.
The road on which the collision occurred is a long straight stretch.
The two young women were travelling in a hired car which collided with a small van being driven by a local man from Glenties.
A number of ambulances and fire brigades, as well as Gardai rushed to the scene of the crash.
The two tourists had to be cut from the wreckage of the car which was completely destroyed.
They were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where it is understood they are being treated for a number of fractures.
Their injuries are not life-threatening.
The driver of the van, a local man from Glenties, was shaken but otherwise unhurt following the crash.
The road had been closed but has now reopened.
A Garda source said “A full investigation into the crash has been
launched but one theory being examined is that the young tourists may
have been on their incorrect side of the road.
“We cannot say at this stage if that is definitely the case but it is
something we are looking at.”
Gardai have appealed to people to slow down with increased traffic on the roads during the Bank Holiday Weekend.
