Letterkenny plants some seeds of hope in the fight against polio

Thousands of colourful flowers will bloom across Letterkenny next spring bringing home a very important message.

October 24th October was World Polio Day.

And to celebrate this auspicious occasion, Letterkenny Rotary Club President Paddy Delap accompanied by Vice President Sharon Gallagher and Club members presented Letterkenny Town Gardener, David Donnelly with 4,000 Purple Crocus Corms.

David and his workers now plan to plant the corms around the Cathedral Town as a symbol of hope in the fight against Polio.

For over 30 years, Rotary Clubs worldwide have been associated with the WHO, and Unicef in the Global polio Eradication Initiative across the world.

Over 2.5 billion children have received vaccinations thanks to Rotary, with only 37 cases being recorded in 2016.

The purple crocus is symbolic of Rotary’s Worldwide campaign to eratidate polio as the purple colour represents the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child that has been immunised.
