Uproar as Go Safe van operates on day speed limit reduced on Letterkenny’s gateway road

There has been outrage among local motorists after a Go Safe van patrolled a road in Letterkenny – on the same day that the speed limit was reduced in the area.

The speed limit on the busy road between the Pole Star roundabout and the Dry Arch roundabout had been 100kph.

However, on Friday last the speed limit was reduced to 80kph after a number of signs were erected.

On the same day, a Go Safe van was operational in the area.

Chairman of Donegal County Council, Cllr Gerry McMonagle, said he was a strong advocate of road safety but said it was “no coincidence” that the Go Safe van was there on the day the speed limit changed.

“These speed reductions came in recently but they could only be introduced when the proper
signs were erected.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Go Safe van was there on the day these speed limits changed.

“I think people should be informed that these speed limits have been reduced so that they are aware of exactly what speed they can drive at.

“I do think overall that the reduction in the speed limit in this area could lead to a build-up of traffic in and out of the town because people will be slowing down,” he said.
