It was a fitting tribute to a man who became known for that gentle salute he would bid to other motorists on the road.

There was great sadness following the news last week of the passing of George Hegarty from Newmills.

A massive crowd turned out to say a final farewell to the much-loved husband and father.

George and his family touched the hearts of the nation last Christmas when son Gareth surprised his dad with a green Morris Minor as a present.

The much-loved local character was laid to rest following his funeral mass at Conwal Parish Church yesterday with burial afterwards at Gortlee Cemetary.

Among the many mourners were his beloved wife Kathleen and 14 children as well as extended family and many friends.

And to ensure that George had a fitting send-off, many classic-car owners turned out in force to say a final farewell to one of their own.

Rest in peace George.

DDTV: George and Kathleen’s class Christmas present isn’t a ‘minor’ one!
