Sparks to fly as Raphoe ABC host major tournament

Deele College in Raphoe plays host to a top class 14-fight card on Saturday night as Raphoe ABC stage major tournament.

A rake of champions at various divisions will trade leather in a tournament that has become a popular feature on the local circuit; one that draws a big crowd.

Recently-crowned Ulster Senior champion Matthew McCole from Dungloe will take on Raphoe puncher Orin McDermott in a welterweight bout.

Last month at the Dockworkers Club in Belfast, McCole defeated Colm Trengove of Spartans to scoop the title.

McDermott himself was a schoolboys champion in his days with Finn Valley ABC and now wears the Raphoe colours.

Raphoe punchers are taking on and Ulster and Connacht Select on Saturday night.

There will be flyweight sparks flying when Raphoe ABC’s Eoin McGarrell (pictured with club coaches Gary McCullagh and Gerard Keaveney) and Dunfanaghy ABC’s Sean Kelly meet.

McGarrell – a former Irish Boy 2 champion – meets Kelly, who in April won the Irish Junior 2 title with a win over Martin C McDonagh at the National Stadium.

Ballindrait bantamweight Dennis Lafferty will be aiming to return to winning ways when he faces Ben Nelson of Townland.

Lafferty was beaten by Conor Quinn of Clonard – who is tipped to mount a challenge for an Ulster Elite title soon – in an Ulster Senior final last month.

Former Irish Boy 3 champ Tom Doherty takes on Omagh’s Michael Ward at 85kgs while there is a wide variety of bouts on a card put together by Raphoe head coach Gary McCullagh.

The first bell is at 8 sharp.
