Met Éireann says that “widespread ground frost and icy patches” are expected on roads across Ireland tonight as temperatures are forecast to dip to minus 2.

Tonight will be very cold and dry, with clear spells and light winds along with pockets of mist and fog, Met Éireann says. The fog should be cleared from areas close to the Atlantic before dawn.

“Cloud will increase in western parts later in the night and temperatures will rise here towards morning. Light variable breezes will become south to southwest overnight and increase moderate near the west coast towards morning,” Met Éireann predicts for Ulster tonight.

The outlook is slightly better for tomorrow, with highs of 7 to 10 degrees.

“Cold with some bright or sunny spells in the east at first but cloud will increase from the west during the morning. Outbreaks of rain will develop in the western parts by midday then spread elsewhere during the afternoon. Afternoon highs of 7 to 10 Celsius but becoming milder after dark. Mildest in the west. Southwest winds will increase Moderate to fresh with but stronger winds near exposed coasts.”

Donegal County Council will be providing road updates on their social media channels throughout the winter months. They urge motorists to assume that no road is ice free during the cold snaps.
