Letterkenny Rugby U18s continue unbeaten start to season

Letterkenny Under-18s remain unbeaten this season after another five-try victory on Saturday over Limavady.

Letterkenny U18 33 Limavady U18 14

From the kick off, Letterkenny immediately went on the attack and after going through a few phases, captain James Sweeney crashed over from 10 metres out beside the posts leaving an easy conversion for Fionn McGarvey.

Five minutes later, Letterkenny were reduced to 14 players when wing Sean O’Broain was very harshly yellow carded after a puzzling decision but from a defensive scrum on their own 22-metre line, hooker Barrett took the ball against the hard and scrum half McGinty broke quickly down the left.

After going thru the hands of McGarvey and Quinn, McGinty was on hand to finish off a good breakaway score. This was converted to leave in 14-0.

Letterkenny kept the pressure on Limavady and they crossed for the third try after 23 minutes when Adam Quinn went over in the left-hand corner after good movement and hands from the Letterkenny back line.

At this stage Letterkenny were building up a good head of steam but some very mysterious refereeing decisions curtailed LK dominance and on the stroke of halftime the Limavady No8 picked from the base of a scrum and barged over to score and this was converted to leave a halftime score of 19-8.

The second half continued on from where the first half ended with LK being dominant but the referee’s decisions meant the LK players were hesitant to do anything for fear of being penalised.

But 15 minutes in first centre Ben Scott forced his way over from open back play and this was converted as was the final score 14 minutes later by Keenan Barrett.

These scores were sandwiched by a score from the powerful Limavady winger who broke thru the cover in centrefield and run in under the posts.

However, Letterkenny could have had up to four more tries only for poor decision making.

Brendan Duggan, Joshua Fulton, James Sweeney and Adam Quinn were all very prominent in both defense and attack for Letterkenny. The team move on from today and now have fixtures the next six weeks starting away next week to City of Derry.

Team: Christopher Gallagher, Keenan Barrett, Brendan Duggan, Joshua Fulton, Conor McMenamin, Mathew McGee,  Joshua Carr,  James Sweeney,  Rory McGinty,  Fionn McGarvey,  Sean O’Broain,  Ben Scott, Adam Quinn,  Oisin McGarvey,  Ciaran Aitken. Subs: Moses Byoake, Hugh Ferry, Owen McGinley.
