Anyone who paid their water charge in Co Donegal is set for a nice little bonus for Christmas.

Irish Water refunds will start to be issued from today after legislation allowing the process to take place was signed at the weekend.

President Higgins signed the Water Services Bill into law at the weekend after several delays in passing the bill.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed that the refunds would commence this week.

He said: “The Water Services Bill finally got through and that means water refunds can begin on Monday, you’ll be able to get details of when you can get your refund on the Irish Water website.”

Refunds will be paid by cheque and almost a million people are set to receive a refund and most will be issued by Christmas.

A refund checker will go live on the site today which allows customers to see how much they are owed and when they will receive it.

Irish Water are urging account holders who may have changed address to update their details by calling 1850 448 448.
