Disappointment over Councillors’ no-show at Cathedral Quarter meeting

The Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter committee held a meeting last night to discuss the success of the group with local councillors and future plans to rejuvenate the heart of the town.

It was a major let-down, however, when nobody turned up.

The Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter was established in 2014 to restore the Church Lane off the Main Street and improve prosperity in the area. They have held culture events and festivals, installed artwork and created maps and tours to drive visitors to the area. They have also planned a number of Christmas events involving various community groups.

A meeting was arranged in Dillon’s Hotel Letterkenny on Tuesday night to showcase the progress of the initiative to Letterkenny Municipal Council members and to seek support for the future.

The meeting had to be abandoned when no representatives appeared.

Committee Secretary Donnan Harvey said invites were emailed to all Councillors prior to the meeting and he spoke with several on the phone who confirmed their attendance.

On the night, however, the representatives were said to have attended a meeting in Galway and were late back.

“But how hard is to pick up a phone to tell us, you can’t make the meeting,” Donnan said.

A statement from the Cathedral Quarter Committee said: “We are very disappointed with this no show, we work on a voluntary capacity to regenerate the area for the community.

“All we are asking for is a bit of support from our elected representatives but unfortunately, that didn’t happen tonight. They have not matched our commitment to our project which aims to develop an area for locals and visitors to enjoy to stimulate business and create jobs.”
