On Monday more than 120 people from National Learning Network (NLN) and RehabCare in Donegal were honoured for their inspirational efforts in achieving qualifications and gaining a range of skills.
The certification ceremony, held in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny, recognised the commitment and enthusiasm shown by those using NLN and RehabCare, both services provided by the Rehab Group.
Over 90 students who attend the Letterkenny National Learning Network, which is a division of the Rehab Group, received their certificates after completing a training programme which aims to develop the students’ personal, social and work related skills, and helps them achieve greater levels of independence and community integration.
More than 30 people who use RehabCare services in Lifford, Ballybofey and Letterkenny were also recognised for completing a range of courses to live more independent lives in the community.
The inspirational event was attended by people who use NLN and RehabCare services, as well as their friends and family, acknowledged the progress and developments made by those receiving awards.
Kieran Blockley, who was a student on the IT and Business Studies course, spoke proudly of his achievement in completing the course.

“From the constant stress of tests and exams to the bullying that I experienced throughout my 5 years (during school), it truly did leave me in a very low place,” said Kieran.
“Once I finished I took 2 years off and isolated myself in my house watching TV and playing computer games. I didn’t have any ambition or drive to go anywhere or do anything, and I was very hesitant getting back into education and panicking about the idea of getting a job.”
However, Kieran says he has improved his confidence and has secured employment in a local store as a result of his time in NLN.
“I can defiantly say that those issues are practically gone. Nowadays you can’t get me to stop working. Just because the past didn’t turn out like you wanted it to, doesn’t mean your future can’t be better than you’ve ever imagined,” Kieran added.
Mo Flynn, Rehab Group CEO, who presented certificates on the day, described how she is always “struck by how hard” people have worked to achieve their goals. She added: “Many people have encountered barriers in the past. I see people who want to move forward in their lives, to make the best of their skills and experience, and to take the next steps in their lives. It is genuinely inspiring to see and, as an organisation, we feel privileged to journey alongside them.”
Mura Herron, National Learning Network area manager, said that she was proud of what everybody had achieved.
Mura added: “Everybody receiving awards here today have worked tremendously hard, they’ve shown incredible dedication, and they each deserve to feel enormously proud of their achievements. This award will help them whether they decide to go into further education or to seek employment.
“In any case, it has already helped the students to develop skills to improve their independence, wellbeing, and to give them the confidence to participate in their own communities.”
“On behalf of the entire team here at NLN and RehabCare, I want to congratulate everybody on having successfully completed their course and to wish them every success in their futures.”
Representatives from the HSE and Donegal Education and Training Board (DETB) also attended the momentous occasion.
NLN and RehabCare, in partnership with the HSE and DETB, provide a range of training courses and supports to people who have a disability, or those who’ve had an accident, illness, injury or require extra supports.
