Michael Lynch wasn’t going to let the small matter of a broken hand prevent him from leading Naomh Colmcille’s quest for Ulster glory.
During the Donegal champions’ Ulster JFC quarter-final win over Ballymachugh, the St Johnston man sustained an injury that would’ve ended the season of most players.
But Lynch is made of different stuff and, having played a leading role in last week’s semi-final win over Tattyreagh, he’s poised to line out in Saturday’s final against Belnaleck at Celtic Park.
“Some boys doubted if I’d be playing,” Lynch said.
“I never doubted it at all. If the game had been on the week before, there was no chance. The pins were still in. I managed to get them out and I was good to go.”
Lynch has played in goal for a variety of teams, including Finn Harps, Derry City and Institute, while he is currently on the books of Donegal League Premier Division pace-setters Kildrum Tigers.
Earlier this year, he was with the Donegal Under-21s – and it was an experience that stood greatly as he was part of the Ulster-winning squad.
Lynch said: “This year is the first year I played Gaelic seriously. I said I’d give soccer a break and try to get into the 21s.
“People here would be saying I should be playing, but I know rightly the standard up there was a different class. It stood to me big time. I learned a lot.”
