Naomh Colmcille might have been making a short jaunt to Derry for the Ulster JFC final against Belnaleck, but they had to make one important pit stop.

The bus paused briefly at the Church of the All Saints in Newtowncunningham. Players and management reflected quietly at the graveside of the late club President James Dowds, who died a fortnight ago today,

“This is everything,” Ryan McKinley, the Naomh Colmcille manager, said after the historic 1-9 to 0-6 win over Belnaleck.

“Once we left the club, Gerard Curran said to me: ‘We’ll take a run up to the grave’.

“30 of us got out and went up to the grave. That shows how much he win. This will go back on the grave tonight.

“Only for James Dowds, there would be no club,”
