Sinn Féin vow to continue with motion of no confidence next week

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD said that regardless of what Fianna Fáil does, Sinn Féin will go ahead with their motion of no confidence next week.

The only thing that will prevent this is the Tánaiste stepping down, he says.

Deputy Adams said: “Regardless of what Fianna Fáil does, Sinn Féin will go ahead with our no confidence motion next week. The only thing that will prevent this is the Tánaiste stepping down. This is nothing personal against Frances Fitzgerald.

“The current focus on whether there will be an election completely misses the main point.

“There is a dysfunctionality at the heart of this government. Frances Fitzgerald, as Minister should have intervened. She should have sent for the Commissioner when she had notice of the intentions to continue the smear campaign against Maurice McCabe.

“Any suggestion that the Tánaiste was unaware of what was happening has been totally undermined by revelations that at least five officials in the Department were aware in advance, and not after the fact, as an Taoiseach stated.

“Instead of circling the wagons, this issue should have been tackled head-on. The fact is that the Taoiseach, the former Justice Minister, and the current Justice Minister, knowing all of this, continued to express full confidence in the Commissioner.

“This is utterly unacceptable and is symptomatic of a culture of no accountability in this government.

“This is the same dysfunctionality that is evident in their complete failure to tackle the crisis in housing and the growing crisis in our hospitals. Enough is enough.”
