Which Donegal beauty spot was named among Ireland’s best winter walks?

A walk in Donegal at wintertime is unpredictable at best, but if you wrap up well and be safe the amazing views are the greatest reward.

Horn Head outside Dunfanaghy is known as a prime summer sunset beauty spot. In wintertime, the headland may be even more of a challenge, but it has earned great praise by one of Ireland’s top travel writers.

The loop at Sheephaven Bay was named as one of Ireland’s best Winter Walks by the Irish Independent’s travel editor Pól Ó Conghaile today, who describes it as ‘the Wild Atlantic Way in a nutshell.’

We have to agree, the remote location offers impressive views, unique wilderness and jarring cliff faces.

Ó Conghaile aptly describes the drive around Horn Head as going ‘to ends of the earth and back’.

The list says the various Horn Head walks are best for couples and coastal lovers, starting from Dunfanaghy and stretching in distance from 1-10km.

Locals would be aware that Horn Head is normally a very windy place. The views are worth the biting breezes though, and Ó Conghaile recommends gazing out from the Discovery Point and taking in the seascape from the old signal tower.

Walkers are advised by sites including dunfanaghy.info to not take the route in bad weather and take care by not going near cliff edges.
