Donegal is in for a ‘dumping’ of snow, forecasters warn

It seems that the worst of the snowfall is yet to come as weather warnings are placed on every Irish county this weekend.

Under the current cold snap, a weather phenomenon on Saturday night is set to bring significant levels of snowfall to Ireland.

Forecasters have today warned that 4-8cm of snow is due to fall on Saturday night and into Sunday. A status orange weather alert is in place for this, while the north west is set to be worst affected by the weather system. Temperatures could plummet to as low as -5 degrees in Ulster.

Siobhan Ryan of Met Eireann has said the upcoming overnight snow event could cause major disruption:

“The snow in the last couple of days has been very scattered. The snow accompanied with this event could be quite significant and it could cause some major disruption by virtue of the fact that it will be a dumping of snow rather than a scattering of showers,” she told RTE Radio One.

The Meteorologist said that temperatures leading up to Saturday night will be extremely cold. A weather feature moving over Ireland is expected to produce significant volumes of rain, which will create the heavy snow event when met with stagnant cold air.

Ms Ryan warned that snowfall accumulations could be higher over the north west.

Friday night is due to be a very cold night too, with lows of -4 degrees and sharp frost expected overnight.
