Fanad overcome champions Cockhill to tighten USL title race

Fanad United blew the Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League title race wide open as they defeated five-in-a-row champions Cockhill Celtic at Traigh-A-Loch.

Fanad United 2 Cockhill Celtic 0

Goals in either half by Tony McNamee and Oisin McMenamin gave Arthur Lynch’s men a deserved win.

Fanad set the tone with McNamee to the fore, going close with two headed attempts before Cockhill player-manager Gavin Cullen denied him from a curling shot.

After Cockhill’s Ronan Doherty drove over the top, Fanad hit the front on 33 minutes when McMenamin found McNamee, who took a neat first touch before finishing.

After the hourm, McMenamin doubled the lead for a superb goal that gave his men breathing space.

Laurence Toland went closest for Cockhill, but it was an off day for the Inishowen men and it took another good save by Cullen to deny McMenamin a third.
