Sheer Sports, Golden Boy happy with ‘mature’ Quigley relocating to Sheffield

Sheer Sports Management Vice President Lyle Green says Donegal middleweight Jason Quigley has made a ‘very mature and well thought-out’ decision to relocate to Sheffield.

Quigley this week confirmed that he is to begin train under Dominic Ingle at his famed Wincobank gym in Sheffield from late December.

The unbeaten Quigley (13-0, 10KOs) had previously trained at the Rock Gym in Carson, California, under the watch of Manny Robles. Now to be based in Sheffield, Quigley will still fight under the Golden Boy Promotions banner and will be managed by the Los Angeles-based Sheer Sports Management.

“He found out what important to him,” Green said.

“People need to know that this wasn’t a hasty decision. He made a very mature and well-thought out decision to go back to Europe.

“From our perspective, and I speak for every member of Sheer Sports, Jason is like family. He’s family first and fighter second and we all want Jason to be in the right frame of mind to be a world champ.

“We 100 per cent support his decision. I know that Golden Boy, also, are very happy with the decision, based upon us having the discussion with them about the decision-making process. He has the full support of his team in America.”

“The whole thing with boxing is that the fighter can be the most talented in the world, but they have to be in the right state of mind in order to excel. We can all appreciate that Jason can fight anywhere in the world and be successful, but he will fight best where he is most comfortable.”

Quigley defeated Glen Tapia to win the NABF middleweight title in March, his first professional title.

A broken right hand and severed tendons have kept the Ballybofey man out of action since that decision win at Fantasy Springs, Indio.

But Quigley, who has been maintaining his training in Donegal at the Raphoe Boxing Club, is ready for a quick ring return in early 2018.

Quigley has fought only once on the east coast of America so far in over three years as a pro – a 2014 destruction of Greg McCoy in Plymouth, Massachusetts – but his teams have big plans between Boston and New York.

Green said: “For the longest time, we have been of the frame of mind that Jason belongs fighting on the east coast. This is one more step towards him fighting on the east coast.

“Madison Square Garden is in love with him and everything he has done in Boston and New York has created an incredible following for him.

“I don’t know when, if ever, he’ll come back to fight in Los Angeles. It is our preference that he would fight no further west than Las Vegas.”

Quigley will be in action ‘an absolute minimum’ four times in 2018 as they edge closer to a homecoming bout for the former European Gold and World Silver medallist.

Green said: “2018 will be a great year. We’re looking forward to getting Jason into the ring and continuing where he left off. It’s really exciting.”
