Organisers of the Donegal Marathon gathered together this week in Kernan’s Spar New Mills to present sponsors, supporters and volunteers with a certificate in recognition of their support of the event over the past four years.

Speaking at the presentation, Dessie Larkin, Chairperson of the Donegal Marathon said: “Over the last four years, the Donegal Marathon has been a tremendous success and that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our very generous sponsors and local businesses as well as the wider community, volunteers and participants.

“We want to thank everyone who has made the marathon possible every year and I’m delighted to present these certificates in recognition of their support.”

Meanwhile, the Donegal Marathon committee is undertaking a full review of the marathon to further build on participants’ experience. To facilitate this process, the event will run as a half marathon for the next two years with a view to returning bigger and better with a full Donegal Marathon in 2020.

Dessie Larkin says the process is about ensuring the best possible experience for runners and walkers of all ages.

He said: “We’ve always been proud to say that the Donegal Marathon is the ‘People’s Marathon’ and people leave with an experience and memories of a challenge that they’ll never forget.

“We never rest on our laurels and every year we strive to improve the event by introducing new elements such as the Team Challenge Cup and Children’s 1K Fun Run.

“Next year’s Team Challenge Cup will be run over a 21KM route, which opens up the event to a wider group of people, particularly Couch to 5K runners and walkers. We’re also working towards the full Donegal Marathon event for 2020 and are committed to making it bigger and better than ever.”

The date for the 2018 Donegal Half Marathon has been confirmed for Sunday 19th August 2018. For more information visit www.donegalmarathon.ie.
