Severe casualties are reported in Melbourne Australia after a horrifying act of violence outside a train station.

A car is believed to have ploughed into pedestrians outside Flinders Street station in Melbourne at around 5pm local time. (6am GMT)

Fourteen people have been injured and some injuries have been described as critical. It is not yet known if any Irish people are among the victims.

Local police are treating the incident as a ‘deliberate act’. While the motivations are unknown, it is not yet being described as a terror attack.

The driver of the vehicle, a white Suzuki SUV, was arrested at the scene. A second man has also been arrested.

The crime scene is currently on lockdown as police and emergency services remain at the scene. The public has been urged to avoid the area.

Victoria Police are appealing for video footage and images from the incident to assist the investigation.
