With a New Year looming, TV3 takes a special look back at the moments that dominated the headlines.
It’s hard to imagine that it was only earlier this year that Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th American President but that inauguration kicked off a truly memorable year across the world and in Ireland.
2017 was a year that saw terrorist attacks across European cities including London, Paris, Stockholm, Barcelona and Manchester.
Enda Kenny stepped down as Taoiseach and was replaced by Leo Varadkar after a contest between him and Simon Coveney. So far Leo’s style of leadership has included an enthusiasm for Justin Trudeau, selfies and socks.
The year had its fair share of scandals and dramas – revelations of millions of faked breath test results and the establishment of the Charleton Tribunal into allegations by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.
Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan stepped down and Tánaiste and former Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald resigned.
North Korea was present in most news reports throughout 2017 and Deputy John Halligan and the Independent Alliance proposed an Irish political delegation to North Korea where Kim Jong Un has fallen out of favour with Donald Trump after launching missiles and calling President Trump a ‘dotard’.
2017 saw the start of a major movement trending as #MeToo across the world which led to people detailing and condemning sexually inappropriate behaviour using the ‘MeToo’ hashtag in the wake of allegations against film producer, Harvey Weinstein.
It has also been the year of extreme weather events. In Ireland Storm Ophelia bought the country to a standstill and led to two deaths while wildfires raged in California, Portugal and Spain and Hurricane Harvey battered Texas, to name but a few.
And then there was Brexit! Which apart from proving a logistical nightmare exposed some rather interesting UK views on Irish history.
