Work commitments have scuppered Declan Walsh’s plans for Donegal return

Malin’s Declan Walsh has been unable to rejoin the Donegal senior football panel, it has emerged.

Alongside the returns of Odhrán Mac Niallais and Leo McLoone, Walsh had been expected to make his return to the fold.

While Mac Niallais and McLoone are among those back in tow, manager Declan Bonner has confirmed that Walsh could not make the commitment.

In early December, Walsh learned that he would be deployed to America by his employers for a six-month period in 2018, meaning he had to shelve his plans of getting back into the Donegal squad.

Walsh was on the 2012 All-Ireland-winning Donegal squad, but hadn’t played since a 2016 qualifier win over Galway at Croke Park.

“We were keen to get Declan in and Declan was very keen to come back in,” Bonner said.

“He just couldn’t come in because of his work commitments. The door will very much be open when he comes back.”
