DD Fitness: How to stick to your January resolutions

written by Emmet Rushe January 13, 2018
FacebookTweetLinkedInPrint

January resolutions. The time of year where people change their lives and REALLY want to stick to those changes, but find it really, difficult to do so.

How then do we break the habit of starting our new healthy regime in January, only to have it fail by February? The answer is in the question!

When it comes to January Resolutions, we like to do a bit of Disneyfying.

We expect everything to be perfect and our diet and training to be on track and to never veer off course until the exact amount of weight we want to lose, is lost. This expectation of perfection is why so many resolutions fail.

Nothing will ever go exactly to plan. Life will get in the way. Family matters will come up. Work issues will arise. General issues might throw you off course.

If you had nothing planned except perfection, when these things arise, you have nowhere to go.

So, how do we break the habit of starting our new healthy regime in January, only to have it fail by February?

Allow yourself to fail!

When you are planning your January resolutions, in your plans, plan for failure.

Why would you plan for failure? It’s simple, because it will inevitably happen.

If you do not allow for something to give along the way, you will be disappointed when it happens and that can lead to you stopping altogether.

Failure is part of life. Our reaction to it and how we deal with it is what determines whether we win or lose.

What I mean by that is;
> If you give up, you’ve lost
> If you keep going you’ve won

Don’t give up because you have had 1 bad meal, or a bad day or a bad weekend.

Nothing good comes from that.

Instead, look at what happened, why it happened and see if you can find a better way around it if something similar comes up again.

By looking for solutions you are finding a way to deal with things if something similar were to happen down the road, and it WILL happen, so please don’t think that it won’t.

But if you are prepared for it and you are expecting these slight blips, you will be able to deal with them and get back on track after they happen.

That is how you stick to your resolutions.
