Gardai in Letterkenny have issued a warning for all motorists to avoid the Lurgybrack Hill outside Letterkenny.

Several cars are reported to be stuck on the hill due to heavy snow and sleet. This area of N13 Ballybofey/Letterkenny Rd is described as treacherous and drivers should take alternative routes and take extreme care.

Gardaí are also reporting snowy and slippery conditions on the Letterkenny/Ramelton Rd (R245).

Heavy snowfall has led to high accumulations across the majority of roads in the county tonight. A Status Orange Snow-ice Warning is in place for Donegal until 12noon on Thursday.

Donegal County Council have highlighted other dangerous areas and advised motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel tonight. Worst affected routes are Meenaroy, Drumkeen, Barnesmore, the back ofErrigal, Pettigo, the N14 Letterkenny to Lifford road andGlentogher. Council gritters were deployed at 6pm and will be out working until midnight.

If you must travel in this weather, the AA Roadwatch remind drivers that it can take up to ten times longer to stop when driving in icy conditions. Slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

If you have school closures, poor road warnings or event cancellations to share, let us know on info@donegaldaily.com
