Ballyliffin wants residents to get into the swing for Irish Open!

A rallying cry has gone out to all residents and business owners in Ballyliffin ahead of the Irish Open golf extravaganza later this year.

The Inishowen village was recently awarded €100,000 for village renewal to coincide with what will be a huge tourism opportunity.

Now a meeting to discuss the Regeneration of Ballyliffin takes place in the Strand Hotel Wednesday 31st January at 8.00pm

The Tidy Towns Committee’s successful application was founded on many years of careful work, developing ideas, opening lines of communication and learning the ‘game’ of grant writing, by the Committee, and by other individuals, businesses and Enterprise Bodies in Ballyliffin.

This award is a tribute to the public and community spirit of the people of Ballyliffin. However, it was linked to the hosting by Ballyliffin Golf Club of the Irish Open.

A spokesperson said “This means Ballyliffin and its area will be the focus of huge media attention. People across Europe and further will see what we are made of; we must be at our best. We need people to come back – and – every area in Inishowen will benefit from our success.

“We have under six months. It is in the interests of everyone, out of personal and commercial interest, to do their utmost to show off Ballyliffin on the weekend of 5th – 8th July next year.

“Tidy Towns is committed: to secure the grant we had to undertake to provide 25% of the amount, half in cash, the rest in voluntary labour and administration. Every business, every household, each estate or street, needs to commit itself to a similar effort: paint jobs, planting, weeding, strimming. We must look our best!

“If we are to achieve the utmost for ourselves, our village and our community, a huge further effort will be needed. It’s really important. A group from Ballyliffin Tidy Towns has been meeting with Council Officials to discuss the best ways to achieve this.

“The major outcome underlined the statement immediately above – it’s up to all of us. We have to make plans and carry them through. Planning has begun, work has begun.”

So if you are interested in improving Ballyliffin, come to the Strand on 31st January at 8.00pm. Hear the plans, share your ideas on what can be done (and how) and join the drive to make it happen. It’s your village!
