The family of missing Strabane woman Lesley McHugh have expressed both grief and gratitude after her body was recovered from the River Foyle yesterday.

Foyle Search and Rescue volunteers found a female body in the river yesterday afternoon.

The body was identified as that of 69-year-old Lesley McHugh, a much-loved mother of three from the Tyrone town.

Ms McHugh’s family issued a statement thanking everyone in the community who has helped them in any way over the past month:

“Thankfully today our mother has been returned to us.”

“May she rest in peace.”

The PSNI said in a statement: “We are sad to announce that during a search of the River Foyle the body of a female was recovered. Our thoughts are with the family involved.”

West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan offered his condolences to the family, saying: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family concerned and all those suffering such difficult loss.”
