McGinty turns the volume up for overnight win in America

Brett McGinty turned in an excellent performance overnight in America to overcome Nikita Ababiy.

McGinty returned to winning ways with a split decision win over Ababiy at the MassMutual Centre in Springfield.

The Oakleaf ABC middleweight was one of only three Irish fighters to record a win on a night when the standard of judging left much to be desired.

McGinty, Paddy Donovan and Krill Afanasev all won, but others were irate at the scoring. Even McGinty could feel a little bemused at being given a split decision verdict.

Having lost out to World bronze medallist Troy Isley earlier in the week and after impressing in stages of that bout, the St Johnston man was out with intent here.

It was another night where McGinty’s power and precision were on show.

Ababiy, from Brookly, New York, is a two-time World Ring Side Champion, but he couldn’t compete with McGinty’s sheer volume.

The third and final leg of the USA v Ireland series takes place on March 21 in Manchester, New Hampshire.
