Seamus Coleman returns, but Ireland lose in Turkish friendly

Seamus Coleman’s first Republic of Ireland game in a year ended in defeat as Turkey scored the only goal of the game in this evening’s friendly in Antalya.

Turkish skipper Mehmet Topal struck in the 52nd minute to condemn Ireland to defeat.

Coleman wore the captain’s armband again, 12 months after suffering a horror leg break against Wales in last March’s World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

The Killybegs man has only recently returned to action with Everton, but played 63 minutes here.

Newcomer Declan Rice stood out for Ireland, whose manager Martin O’Neill used the chance to give game time to no fewer than 17 players.

The sight of Coleman back in the Irish shirt was one of the game’s big plusses for Ireland.
