Kieran Blockey explains all you need to know about the 10th-anniversary Darkness Into Light event:

On Saturday the 12th of May 2018, at 4:15am, thousands of people all over Donegal and Ireland will take to the streets in support of Pieta House’s Darkness Into Light and their aim of tackling mental health issues.

Early Bird registration will end on April 11th, and participants can save €5 on adult registration until this date.  Register now at www.darknessintolight.ie.

Darkness Into Light is a fantastic annual fundraising and awareness event created by Pieta House in hopes to raise money for the charity, promote suicide prevention and defeat the stigma around mental illnesses in Ireland through participants doing a 5k walk/run on closed roads in the early hours of the morning.

Pieta House was founded in Dublin in 2006 and today has 12 centres over Ireland with the intention of providing free counselling to those who are suffering from suicidal thoughts, people who are engaging in self-harm and those who have been affected by suicide.

Created in 2009, Darkness Into Light originally gathered an impressive few hundred participants for that year, in 2017 though they had a reported 180,000 people attending the event worldwide.

Since the event began Darkness Into Light has grown in popularity with increasingly more people attending it each year and is now held in an estimated 180 venues in 14 countries across the world in countries including Spain, Hong Kong, Canada and New Zealand.

In Donegal there are 10 venues where you can sign up to do the walk, to find the closest one to you visit https://dil.pieta.ie/event-information/venues
