A 21-year-old man who chased a group down Letterkenny Main Street with a hurley has been ordered to make a donation to St Vincent de Paul.
Nathan McGinley of 10 Windmill View, Glencar, Letterkenny, was before Letterkenny District Court charged with the offence, which occurred at 1.05am on November 19, 2016.
Inspector Sean Grant said Gardai were on patrol in an unmarked car when they observed a group running up the Main Street.
McGinley was ordered to drop the hurley, which he did.
Solicitor for McGinley, Kieran O’Gorman, said the defendant’s brother and sister had become involved in an argument with the group when McGinley, who plays hurling, ‘interjected and chased them down the road’.
Judge Paul Kelly said: “He isn’t entitled to take a weapon into his hand and chase people down the streets. He should have contacted the Gardai in the first place.
Judge Kelly ordered McGinley to make a €150 donation to St Vincent de Paul.
