Snooker – Paul Gallagher retains CYMS Close title

The final of the CYMS Close Final between Paul Gallagher and Shane McGettigan took place in the snooker club on Friday night.

Paul, no stranger to finals being the defending champion and a 6 time Donegal Senior Snooker Champion, was odds on going into the final against Shane, who having only taking up snooker few years back, was into his first ever final.

The first frame got underway and the nerves started to get the better of Shane as Paul got in and made a 24 and 35 break to take the first frame 1-0.

The second frame got underway and was pretty much the same as the first for Shane as he struggled to get the run of the balls and Paul’s experience saw the frame out to take a 2-0 lead and one away from retaining the title.

Shane was starting to feel more comfortable as he made a great start to the 3rd frame with a 25 break to shake off the nerves as Paul struggled to get going and Shane took the remaining scraps to get a frame on the board for 2-1 and after a very cagey 4th frame between both players, Shane took it on a black ball with what was a lucky pot to make it 2-2.

Going into the 5th and final frame the momentum was with Shane but this time Paul’s experience showed and he managed to retain the title on the blue colour after what was a close match.

Well done to Paul again and will be looking to make it 3 in a row next year and unlucky to Shane but great experience for him.
