Volunteers need more than bags to keep beaches clean – Councillor

A Donegal county councillor has pleaded with the local authority to give more “joined-up” support to people cleaning up beaches and beauty spots.

Cllr Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig said the recent hot spell has left some of our beaches in horrific conditions.

There have been widespread reports of beach parties being hosted at various locaitions but people leaving all sorts of litter behind then.

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbui said there are plenty of local volunteers willing to take up the cause and to clean beaches.

BVut he said they must be full-assited by the council.

He said “We need more joined up thinking on the ground. These voluntary groups are saving the state a fortune but we need to respond to their gestures of good will.

“People from the enovironment section of the council must beliasing wiht these people to ensure they have all they need and I don’t just mean a few plastic bags.

“We need a more hands-on apporach if we are to be serious about making our beaches part and parcel of our plans to attract tourists to Donegal,” he said.
