Listen: Gary McDaid reflects as Donegal U20s fail to ‘fulfil potential’

A dejected Gary McDaid sat in a Healy Park dressing room and tried to come to terms with a defeat that brings the Donegal U20s to the end of the Championship road.

After a 17-point win over Cavan a week ago, hopes were high for Donegal, but they were well below par as Derry sneaked away with a 0-16 to 2-9 win.

“Things just didn’t work out for us,” McDaid sighed.

“Last week, everything worked out for us. We were only beaten by a point today and we didn’t perform anywhere near the levels we’re capable of. We always talked about not under-selling themselves on a Championship day.

“It’s so difficult because they didn’t perform and didn’t fulfil their potential. Last week, they were unbelievable. It didn’t work out for them today. I can’t fault their effort and commitment all year; they’re leaving the camp better players.”

The cut throat nature of this Championship means that defeat ends the year for Donegal.

McDaid said: “It’s not easy, now. The work we put in was second to none. This wasn’t something we were ever thinking about; a speech to wish the boys all the best in the rest of their careers.”
