Listen: Declan Bonner says Donegal have to guard against an upset against Down

Declan Bonner says Fermanagh’s win over Monaghan on Sunday serves as a reminder that no game in Ulster ‘can be taken for granted’.

Donegal face Down in the second Ulster SFC semi-final this weekend, with hopes high that Donegal can book a spot against the Erne in the final. Donegal are hot favourites, but Bonner says the Fermanagh result came as a stark message against complacency.

“Down are always capable of upsetting the odds in any Championship game,” Bonner warned.

“They did it against Monaghan last year. It’s a big battle and we have to be ready for it. I’m sure Down have done a lot of work on us, but we just need to get the performance up to a level.

“It’s a huge occasion and it’s a great place to be. There were certain aspects of the Derry game we weren’t happy with, but we’ve been working on those. The lads have worked really, really hard.

“This is a relatively young Donegal side. It’s important that the supporters are right behind them. They can act like a 16th man.”

Since beating Cavan and Derry, Bonner’s men have knuckled down and hope to make it three wins from three in Ulster.

He said: “Everything we have done is geared towards getting the performance and the result on Sunday.”
