A status orange warning for severe winds has been put in place for Donegal as an alert for Storm Hector.

The storm is expected to bring extreme wind gusts to the north west and Galway, Sligo and Mayo on Wednesday Night.

Heavy rain is also due to lash down on the west of Ireland throughout the night and at times during the weekend.

From 9pm Wednesday to 10am on Thursday we can expect strong winds of mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/hr with gusts of 110 to 125 km/hr.

People in coastal areas are warned to take extra care tonight.

Thursday will have an unsettled start to the day, with Met Eireann forecasting that the winds will ease off for another warm day. Highs of 15 to 19 degrees.

The weekend outlook predicts regular outbreaks of rain and some heavy showers.
