The community support group for Newtowncunningham woman Vanessa Donohue have received some uplifting news and positive campaign boosts in the past day.

Vanessa Donohoe, who took ill in Spain last weekend, was taken off life support yesterday and is said to be making progress in her recovery. The mum-of-three is being cared for in a Barcelona hospital following surgery for a severe brain aneurysm.

Vanessa’s sister Gillian shared a much-welcomed update on her condition on social media last night. On behalf of the family, she said: “Vanessa is off life support she still has a long road ahead but she has made great progress today thanks to all your prayers! We are so delighted with all the support and well wishes and are forever grateful to you all! Keep the prayers going please.”

The community of Newtowncunningham and beyond are passionately fundraising for the Donohoe family to support them financially during this difficult time.

A music night and BBQ was held on Tuesday in Peter’s Bar, with the amazing fundraising total revealed at €5250.

The Recovery Fund committee also organised a massive country music night for Vanessa in An Grianan Hotel. As of this evening, generous supporters have snapped up all 400 tickets and the event is now been sold out.

A GoFundMe campaign for Vanessa‘s fund continues to trend online, with €6,855 raised by 170 people in just two days.

The committee are hoping to reach an initial target of €25,000 to support Vanessa’s treatment and to assist her husband PJ and children as they stay with her in Barcelona

More events are planned in Newtowncunningham this weekend. A fundraising spinning cycle will be held at Kernan’s Eurospar Newtowncunningham on Saturday the 16th June from 9am to 6pm. The U12 boys from Killea and Naomh Chomcille are taking on the challenge in support of their teammate, who is a son of Vanessa’s.

Other fundraisers include collections at tea and coffee events after mass, football sponsor cards being sold to win a Zinedine Zidane signed jersey, and an envelope drop throughout the area.
