LIDL Ireland is recalling batches of sweet popcorn over health fears.

The supermarket chain, which has a number of stores across Donegal, is asking customers to return Snack Day Sweet Popcorn because of “an elevated level of tropane alkaloids”.

A message of the FSAI website reads: “Lidl Ireland is recalling the above two batches of Snack Day Sweet Popcorn due to an elevated level of tropane alkaloids.

“The implicated product was on sale in Lidl Ireland stores from 7th May.

“Lidl has issued an in-store notice requesting customers who have bought this product to return it to a Lidl store.”

The affected product – pack size 200g – have a best before dates of December 30 and December 31, 2018.

Anyone who bought the affected Snack Day Sweet Popcorn is asked to return it.

According to the European Food Safety Authority, tropane alkaloids are “secondary metabolites which occur in several plant families“.
