Mickey McCann hails Donegal’s comeback in Nicky Rackard final

Mickey McCann lost a Nicky Rackard Cup final as a player in 2006 – but the Burt man guided Donegal to glory at Croke Park this afternoon.

Goals from Gavin Browne and Declan Coulter gave Donegal a 2-19 to 0-18 win, having been 0-12 to 0-8 behind at half-time.

It gave Donegal their second slice of Rackard glory and McCann hailed his men for their comeback.

“It makes it all the sweeter after we were four points down,” he said.

“The heads can drop very handy at that, but we rectified things and got back on track. Warwickshire were very accurate, they punished us and they tagged on nine points very quickly.

“We pushed on in the second half. We played at a different tempo. It was a bit of a test, but listen we had the work done and the fitness was there.”

Browne’s classy goal in the 48th minute turned the tide in Donegal’s favour, as the Sean MacCumhaills man hit the roof of the net.

McCann said: “Gavin’s goal was a big turning point and we pushed on.

“I’m delighted for Gavin. Declan is well used to the big games, but Gavin has just joined the panel and he’s just hit an important goal that turned the game.”

A win at headquarters, following an encouraging League campaign tops off 2018 for Donegal’s hurlers.

McCann said: “It means everything. They’ve put in a big effort.

“When the test came, we asked them at half-time if they were able for it. They took a look around at each other. Warwickshire were working harder.

“We told them they weren’t working hard enough and they were standing around waiting on some other man. They all put the shoulders to the wheel and we got the reward.”
