Donegal have been hit with a hammer blow blow after news that Patrick McBrearty suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The Kilcar man has had his worst fears confirmed with a scan in Letterkenny on Monday showing he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.

McBrearty’s season is over as Donegal get ready for the ‘Super 8s’ and a clash with Dublin at Croke Park in three weeks’ time.

The Donegal forward will undergo surgery and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

McBrearty was withdrawn from Sunday’s Ulster final win over Fermanagh after just three minutes of the second half.

The 24-year-old had been in scintillating form for Donegal this year. Having been the county’s top scorer in the League with 0-34, he hit 0-19 in Donegal’s Ulster Championship campaign.
