Illies Celtic advanced to the quarter-finals of the WFAI Intermediate Cup on Sunday as they edged out Fanad United.

In a tight contest at Stranaclea, Alison McGonagle’s free-kick proved to be the difference on the day as John Doherty’s team reached the last eight.

In the early exchanges, there were few chances, but Illies took the lead when Claire Doherty leapt highest to head home from a corner. Doherty timed her jump perfectly and headed to the net.

Fanad came back into it and began to turn the screw a little.

Packie McElwaine’s girls drew level close to half-time when Amanda Callaghan fired home from a 25-yard free kick.

Fanad had a couple of half chances again before the break, but the sides were deadlocked at the changeover.

It was Illies who took the win as, 16 minutes from the end, McGonagle cracked home a free-kick of her own to send Illies into the quarter-final draw.
