Donegal County Council are working to clear long traffic tailbacks in Ballybofey and Stranorlar this afternoon after motorists endured delays of up to an hour on the main street.
Frustrated motorists were left sitting in gridlock this morning due to multiple sets of traffic lights, roadworks and a heavy volume of vehicles passing through on the way to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in Ballyliffin.
Roadworks are believed to be the main cause of the delays as traffic lights at the bridge and the Donegal Road prevented any regular flow of traffic. Large numbers of golf fans were warned to avoid the area if travelling to Inishowen.
“I don’t understand why roadworks were still happening when they knew that more cars are passing through for the Irish Open. Traffic in Ballybofey is bad enough at the best of times. This was just chaotic,” said one motorist, who was sitting in tailbacks for 40 minutes.
In the past hour, Donegal County Council has carried out measures to alleviate the problems.
