Donegal County Councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig has hailed plans to hire another tourism officer for Donegal.
The new post is a joint venture by Donegal County Council and Údrarás na Gaeltachta.
The West Donegal councillor said “I believe it to be very encouraging to see the new tourist officer job advertised on the council website.
“Over the last number of years, I have raised the importance of branding and marketing our Gaeltacht communities differently from the rest of the county.
“I have spoken this last week with senior management in both council and Údarás about the importance of learning from other communities throughout Europe that have focused heavily on tourism as a way of economic recovery and sustaining communities.”
He added that tourism can bring benefits, but we must also be very careful and conscious of the cultural, environmental and economic impact it will have on our communities.
He added “Generally, it is the business classes that benefit mostly from the tourist industry and I strongly believe that if we are going to look to tourism as a way of economic recovery we, the workers, must benefit as well and not just have seasonal work and expect to receive only the Minimum wage.”
