123 allegations about Donegal Gardaí made to GSOC in 2017

Over 123 complaints were filed against gardaí in Donegal to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission last year.

Nationally, complaints about Gardaí to GSOC are up 10% to 1,949. These complaints contained 4,459
allegations — each complaint can contain several allegations.

The number of allegations in Donegal has dropped from the previous year when 146 cases were filed in the county. Allegations are counted prior to GSOC determining which could be admitted and dealt with and which could not. The annual GSOC report, which was published yesterday, has not specified the number of complaints dealt with per county.

The three most common circumstances which gave rise to complaints in 2017 were: the conduct of investigations by gardaí, road policing incidents and the conduct of arrests by gardaí.

There were 24 referrals received from the gardaí of matters where it appeared that ‘the conduct of a member of An Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person’. Seven of these referrals related to fatalities.

The report has been laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.
