A group of Sinn Féin party members brought public concerns to senior gardaí today in a bid to end the recent crime spree in South Inishowen and East Donegal.
Residents of many border towns have been on high alert and living in fear of burglaries this month due to a rise in suspect vehicles and properties being targetted by thieves.
The Sinn Féin members who visited Letterkenny Garda Station this afternoon discuss the issue were: Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn, Cllr Gerry McMonagle (Chairperson of Donegal Joint Policing Committee), Cllr Jack Murray and Cllr Liam Doherty.
The delegation said they achieved assurance from Garda Supt Michael Finan and other senior gardaí that the authorities are committed to bringing the criminals to justice.
Speaking afterwards, Senator Mac Lochlainn said: “The community and businesses in East Donegal and South Inishowen have been plagued by criminals again over recent weeks.
“It is believed that these criminals are operating from bases in Derry City and targeting homes and businesses along the Donegal border from St Johnston over to Muff and Bridgend.
“Supt Finan and his senior colleagues assured us that they are fully cooperating with the PSNI to bring these criminals to justice and I would appeal to the local community to bring any information that could be of assistance in these investigations to the Gardaí or the PSNI.
Senator Mac Lochlainn added: “This recent spate of robberies and break ins again demonstrates the need for the Government to increase resources to the Gardaí here in Donegal and my party will continue to fight for extra gardaí and garda vehicles as well as civilian support staff.”
