Councillor Martin Harley has welcomed funding of €157,500 for a programme of works to mitigate against flood risk in the twin towns of Ballybofey-Stranorlar.
“The work to improve embankments and clear potential obstruction and debris is vital to protect against possible flood damage in the future,” Mr Harley said.
“The €157,500 being provided by the Office of Public Works for Ballybofey-Stranorlar will be used to remove vegetation and trees along the Finn and also to build sumps and pumping areas.
“As a councillor for the Municipal District of Stranorlar I am all too aware of the devastation that floods can wreak on families, businesses and communities.
“Back in May when investment was announced for flood relief measures for the county under the CFram (Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management) programme our Government committed to looking at other smaller schemes that would help mitigate problems.
“This is living up to that commitment. The work being carried out in the twin towns is an important step in reducing risk and protecting the community.”
Flood relief schemes worth about €11million have been announced to protect Lifford, Castlefin, Burnfoot, Ballybofey-Stranorlar, Downings, Glenties and Kerrykeel.
Mr Harley added: “We now have written confirmation to Donegal County Council that it can access the €157,500 funding by mid-November to carry out work in Ballybofey-Stranorlar and officials are also committed to ensuring ongoing maintenance.
“I met Minister for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief Kevin Boxer Moran to discuss flood relief plans a number of weeks ago and I want to thank him for his continued focus on the needs of flood relief schemes in Donegal.”
