Dylan Browne McMonagle (Letterkenny Jockey)
Dylan Browne McMonagle just keeps grabbing the headlines.
Having recently surpassed his first century of winners – and having become the first Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub Sports Person of the Week, in association with O’Reilly’s, the Letterkenny jockey has reached even new heights.
He created a new record on Sunday at the Big Isle when he rode a staggering EIGHT winners – beating Rossa Ryan’s record of seven at Ramelton a few years ago.
Browne McMonagle had wins on He’s Got It and Five Stone of Lead early in the meet before he continued the form aboard Athea Jade and Aideens Dream.
After wins on Let It Go, That’ll Do and Ba An Daingan, Browne-McMonagle was in seventh heaven. As if by fate, he took his final win in the Decky Holian Memorial Race on the aptly-named Dylans Pride – and he left with the Tom McLaughlin Memorial Cup for being champion jockey, too.
Cody Dunnion (Swilly Seals)
It was a weekend to remember for the Swilly Seals swimming club as they won their first ever national medals in the Irish National Swimming Championships.
Cody Dunnion was the history maker as he won silver in the 400m individual medley – Swilly Seals’ first medal at national level.
Over the three days of action, Dunnion won another three bronze, leaving the capital with four medals from a superb weekend.
Mark English (UCD AC)
Mark English had been an injury doubt for the Irish Senior Athletics Championships after pulling up during the Morton Games recently.
But the Letterkenny man, running for UCD AC, returned to action at Morton Stadium on Sunday and won his sixth Irish 800m title – and his fifth in a row.
English timed his run to perfection to move away from John Fitzsimons of Kildare AC to win in 1:50.82.
Geraldine McLaughlin (Donegal ladies)
The Donegal ladies set up an All-Ireland quarter-final against Armagh with a 1-13 to 3-6 win over Kerry on Saturday at Dr Hyde Park.
Donegal were five points up at half-time with Eilish Ward getting the goal. Donegal were pushed to the pin of their collars with Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Amanda Brosnan getting second-half goals for the Kingdom.
But McLaughlin was the main reason that Donegal got over the line. The Donegal star top scored again, kicking eight points in another five-star display by the Termon woman.
Brendan O’Donnell (Lifford Strabane AC)
Last Tuesday night at the North Down Open Athletics Meet, Lifford-Strabane AC’s Brendan O”Donnell set a new Donegal record in the hammer throw.
The 18-year-old, who is in his second year of senior competition, reached out to 58.71 metres, his second round throw beating the previous best of 56.09m.
O’Donnell, who is still a junior by virtue of his age, actually surpassed the 60 metre mark with his final throw which was measured at 60.10m but it didn’t register, as the hammer landed just outside the left hand sector line.
