Shocking scenes as gang pull safe out of Letterkenny business

These are the shocking scenes after a gang tried to pull a safe out of a Co Donegal business in a daring overnight raid.

The four-man gang used a rope and pitching posts to roll a safe out of Tinney’s Oil at Bonagee on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

The gang are understood to have caused more than €10,000 worth of damage during the botched robbery.

They managed to pull the large safe through the doors of the premises and out onto the yard of the oil station.

However, an alarm was tripped sending both the owners and Gardai rushing to the scene around 4.30am.

The raiders abandoned the safe and fled with just €450 in cash which was used as a float for the business.

As the raiders fled they were confronted by members of the Tinney family and Gardai but they managed to escape by mounting a footpath.

Mr Eddie Tinney said the family are now helping Gardai.

“They got away with €450 of a float and they caused a lot of damage to the doors and inside.

“They managed to get around the Gardai and mounted a footpath and escaped. It’s a pity I didn’t have the lorry and I could have stopped them,” he said.

Gardai forensic teams arrived on the scene of the dramatic raid this morning.

It is understood part of their investigation will centre around the CCTV footage from the premises in which the culprits could be identified.
